Area Facts: Mardela Springs, Maryland, a few miles northwest of Salisbury along U.S. 50, is where Charles Mason and Jeremiah Dixon of the British Royal Observatory placed stones to mark their Mason-Dixon Line, separating the free states from those where slavery was legal.
